New Lights for Birchwood

The City has installed new lights along the pathway in Birchwood Park. The lights went in on Monday, May 5. We understand that the old ones will be removed once the full installation has been completed and the new lights are functioning. We hope they will provide a brighter, more efficient and consistent light source on the path. Let us know what you think.

Misuse of New Garbage Cans in Birch Glen Park

We were all pleased to see the two new Recycle/Garbage cans that the City of

Mississauga Parks Department had installed on the North side of the pathway in Birch Glen Park. Brand new and bright blue, they replaced the old rusty ones we had by the bridge before. We had a new repository for litter and dog poop. But it looks as though some residents have something else in mind.
      On a recent walk through the park, the cans contained bags of household garbage as well as food waste that should have gone into a green bin. This has been reported to the Parks Department for follow-up.
       All residents of this neighbourhood should be aware that garbage, recycling and organic waste is collected once a week on Tuesday, and that it must be placed on the curb in front of each house. Two bags are permitted per address. Additional waste must have a tag. 
         Owners who have a secondary or rental apartment in their home should ensure their renter can place waste at the curb to prevent it ending up in the park waste bins.

Gypsy Moth Workshop on Nov. 23

Residents are invited to take part in a free public workshop to learn more about reducing the Gypsy moth population on private property. The workshop will take place at the Lorne Park Public Library, 1474 Truscott Drive, between 12:30--2:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2013.

If you are concerned that the trees on your property may have been infected with Gypsy moth, mark the date and be sure to attend this informative workshop.

Last two yard waste pickups for 2013

There are only two  yard waste pickups left this year and they will happen these next two weeks.

• Tuesday, November 19 and
• Tuesday, November 26

These will be the final pickups for the winter season, starting up again in Spring 2014. Take advantage of these days to clear your yard and deck of all the fallen leaves and trimmed branches. Watch here for April startup dates.

Make sure to use open containers or paper yard waste bags if you want your yard waste to be collected.

Tag Exemption this week and next

Garbage/waste pickup is one day later this week because of the Victoria Day holiday on Monday. It is also the annual 2-week Garbage Tag Exemption period that follows Victoria Day in Missisauga and Peel. Therefore, this Wednesday, May 22, you can put out unlimited bags of garbage. See the Region of Peel Waste Management Guide 2013/2014 for details. If you have misplaced the copy of the Guide that was delivered to your door, you can find it all online at www.peelregion.ca/waste.

Pickup reverts to Tuesday next week for this area.

Our next exemption days will be after Labour Day in September.

Invalid Phone Cards from Local Convenience Store

A resident reported that a phone card purchased from the local convenience store on Johnsons Lane was already expired prior to the purchase. Although this seems hard to believe, it is true.
         When the resident attempted to return the card to the convenience store for a refund, the proprietor refused to refund the price or replace the card. This, even though it was done on the same day as the purchase, within half an hour of purchase! He did not offer any explanation for the problem, not did he make any effort to rectify it. The resident telephoned the card provider, Maximum, to file a complaint and to see if they could do anything to solve the problem. The company was able to determine that the particular card had expired in 2005 -- that is seven (7) years ago!!! To help the resident, Maximum agreed to provide a new PIN so that the card could be used. They may not have been required to do so, but it does show good customer relations.They also are following up with the store to determine why this happened.
          Meanwhile ... Advice from Maximum to all residents of Birch Glen, and any other person who shops at the Johnsons Lane convenience store is:

• DO NOT purchase any pre-paid phone cards from this convenience store;
• Be aware that stores of this sort often buy product from other stores that are going out of business, and that some of this product may already be expired or past its "best buy" date;
• Also realize that smaller stores may not have a return policy -- buyer beware.

Street grinding to start

The City will start grinding the old pavement/asphalt early next week, either on Monday, Sept. 17 or Tuesday,Sept. 18. This is the removal of the top surface in preparation for re-paving.

Please make sure to move your cars off the roads by 7 a.m., otherwise they will be towed awy.
